PCSO Issued 121 Citations During Labor Day Campaign

Sep 11, 2017

The Peoria County Sheriff's Office partnered with the Illinois Department of Transportation and law enforcement throughout Illinois for the 2017 “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” Labor Day impaired driving enforcement campaign. From Aug. 21 through the early morning hours of Sept. 5, patrols were increased in an effort to keep impaired drivers off our roadways.

The Peoria County Sheriff's Office ramped up its enforcement efforts, adding 3 seatbelt checkpoints and 13 additional patrols. The additional patrols resulted in 34 seat-belt citations, 21 speeding citations, 2 child safety seat violations and 53 other moving violations. Additionally, 6 drivers were arrested for Driving on a Suspended or Revoked License, and one driver was arrested for Driving While Under the Influence.

“Alcohol- and drug-impaired driving has claimed too many lives, and the „Drive Sober‟ campaign was a chance for us to help make zero fatalities a reality on Illinois roads,” said Sheriff Brian Asbell. “People die every day at the hands of impaired drivers, and our law enforcement officers were out in full force, arresting drivers who were under the influence,” Sheriff Asbell said. Sheriff Asbell added," I believe local drivers are listening to law enforcement warnings about impaired driving, and are using safe modes of transportation to get them home safely. The Peoria County Sheriff's Office will continue to educate drivers about the dangers of driving impaired with hopes that they won't ever operate a vehicle under the influence."

“It is everyone‟s responsibility to refrain from drinking and driving,” said Sheriff Asbell. “Drinking and driving is a choice—one you should never make."

The 2017 Labor Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown was funded by federal highway safety funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and is managed through IDOT.
