The importance of screening your child

Ashley is Kate’s first child. Kate knows how important the first three years of her baby’s life are. She wants to do everything she can to contribute to the positive development of her baby during this critical period. Ashley is not talking as much as other kids her age in the play group she attends and Kate has questions about the development of her daughter. She wonders who to call to check her child’s development.

Samuel is Jennifer’s second child. She also knows how important the first three years of life are. She wants to do everything to make sure his development stays on track. As Samuel grows, Jennifer recognizes that he is developing at a different rate than his older sister. Jennifer is concerned because Samuel is not crawling around the same time his older sister did. Jennifer wonders who she can call to ask questions about her child’s development.

Kate and Jennifer should call their local pediatrician or family medical provider, Health Department, Screening Agency or Child and Family Connections office to help answer questions about their child’s development.

After answering a few questions, Kate and Jennifer are asked to schedule Ashley and Samuel for a developmental screening.

What is a developmental screening?

• A developmental screening is a “learning check-up” for your child
• Screenings provide information about your child’s development

Why should I have my child screened?

• A screening helps parents understand what is going on now and what to expect of their child in the future
• Screenings help parents learn about developmental expectations.

When should my child be screened?

• Experts recommend children be screened three times during their first year, twice during their second year and once a year until age 5.
