Nov 2, 2015

To honor all who served, a Veterans Day Open House will be hosted by Heddington Oaks on Wednesday, November 11, 2015, from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m.. Veterans of all ages are encouraged to attend. County Board Chairman Andrew A. Rand will offer welcoming remarks at 1:30 p.m., along with a presentation of colors by the Sheriffs Honor Guard and singing of the National Anthem by students at St. Marks School. Peoria County Board Members and Elected Officials have also been invited. Afternoon coffee and desserts will be provided.

During the Open House, the general public may view and cast a vote in the Veterans Day Student Art Contest. The contest is an opportunity for Peoria County K-5 students to create artistic visions of their appreciation for veterans. The exhibit of artistic entries will be on public display starting November 11 at Heddington Oaks and will remain open for public viewing through Friday, November 13.  Contest details may be found at www.HeddingtonOaks.com. The deadline for students to submit entries is November 6.

Final designs of the upcoming Peoria County Veterans Memorial will also be on display. Honorary bricks are still available and may be purchased during the Open House.

In addition, attending veterans will be able to record their discharge papers (DD-214) on-site at Heddington Oaks during the Open House. Staff from the Recorder of Deeds Office will record the papers and provide certified copies of the DD-214 as well as a wallet card to help the vet remember where the document is on file. Thereafter, the wallet card can be presented in the Recorders Office at any time to obtain additional certified copies of the DD-214 free of charge.

Lastly, staff from Peoria Countys Veterans Assistance Commission will be available to answer questions or address concerns for local veterans. According to the latest Census, over 14,000 veterans live in Peoria County. Indeed, over twenty (20) World War II veterans currently call Heddington Oaks their home.

Heddington Oaks is located at 2223 W. Heading Ave in West Peoria. For more information about the Veterans Day Open House, contact Jenny Fulton, Peoria Countys Director of Strategic Communications, at 309-672-6918.
