CDI Participants Celebrate Course Completion
May 26, 2015
Over the past year, Peoria Countys Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) Ad-hoc committee, in partnership with the Illinois Black Chamber of Commerce, has sponsored a Contractor Development Initiative for minority, women, and disadvantaged construction contractors to gain professional development training. Over twenty MBE firms participated in this years pilot program designed to help build minority contractor capacity and enhance local construction opportunities. Components of the program included identifying project opportunities; bonding and financial management; assistance with project bidding; and training in marketing, procurement, certification, contract law, and more. Over the past year, initial assessments and work plans were created, growth issues were identified, bonding was obtained or increased, and contractors pursued appropriate projects.
In addition to its own financial commitment, Peoria County is currently seeking funding from public and private partners to continue the program for three more years. Each year, the goal is to continue high level engagement with 25-30 MBE firms throughout the region in an effort to assess and address business development constraints, overcome access to capital/bonding barriers, and identify mentors and job opportunities. The program will continue to rely heavily on training, one-on-one consultations regarding business development, and opportunity identification for clients.
