Peoria County Highway Wins Award for Bridge
May 12, 2015
During last weeks annual conference for the Illinois Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA), the Peoria County Highway Department received recognition for design and construction of the Thomas J. McFarland Memorial Bridge in the Transportation category for projects costing less than $5 million. The APWA Award also recognized Crawford, Murphy & Tilly, Inc. for project design, and Stark Excavating, Inc. as the primary construction contractor. Total cost of the bridge replacement project was $2.2 million.
Dedicated to former County Engineer Thomas McFarland, the bridge was reopened to traffic on November 14, 2014 with several significant design and safety improvements, including higher clearance over Kickapoo Creek for floodwaters; fewer piers within the streambed; installation of new storm sewers, curbs, and gutters to handle storm water; and the addition of a sidewalk for pedestrian traffic. Roadway safety was also enhanced with new signage, better geometry, and improved driveway entrances. A four-way stop was installed, replacing the previous two-way stop/two-way yield intersection to the west of the bridge.
