What are STDs and how do they spread?
Most STDs (sometimes called STIs or Sexually Transmitted Infections) are caused by infection with viruses or bacteria. These viruses and bacteria can live in body fluids, mainly blood, semen and vaginal fluids. STDs can be spread during vaginal, anal or oral sex. Some STDs can also be spread by skin to skin contact. ANY sexually active person can get an STD.
What are the signs of STDs?
People infected with STDs may have no symptoms at all or mild symptoms which are mistaken for something else. Symptoms can be painful and embarrassing. Many people with STDs have no symptoms but they can still infect you!
Can STDs hurt your health?
YES! STDs can cause lasting pain, inability to have children, cancer, damage to the heart, liver, and brain, if pregnant it can damage your baby, and death.
The Peoria City/County Health Department STD Clinic:
- Tests for gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, and HIV.
- Gonorrhea and chlamydia testing is a simple urine test (you pee in a cup)
- Offers rapid HIV test (result ready in 15-20 minutes)
- Walk-in clinics are on: Monday, Wednesday, & Thursday 12:30-4:00. We may stop taking patients early if client volume is high.
- Offers treatment for gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis
- You can get your results either by calling the clinic or receiving a coded text message on your cell phone
