The Peoria County Sheriff's Office periodically has openings for employment. Commissioned Employment

A Deputy Sheriff must be 21 years of age, a U.S. Citizen, a High School graduate or equivalent, a resident of Peoria County (or be willing to relocate within a year of being hired) and be able to pass a series of tests. The tests include:

  • Attend Orientation meeting (usually at the Sheriff's Office.)
  • A written test (general aptitude) given by Bradley University
  • A physical ability test (Peace Officer Wellness Evalution Report)
  • A background investigation
  • A polygraph
  • Fingerprinting
  • An oral interview
  • A psychological exam
  • A pre-employment medical exam

All of the above are mandatory. Applicants are on probation for a period of one year. Applicant needs to turn in with the Application a copy of their Birth Certificate and a copy of their High School Diploma or GED. These do not have to be Certified copies. If the Applicant was in the U.S. Military, they must submit a copy of their DD214.

Starting salary for a Deputy Sheriff is $38,989.00 . The Peoria County Sheriff's Office provides health insurance (80/20) at a reasonable cost to the employee, which include medical, dental, and vision, as well as a retirement package.

Salary is determined by union contract.

Jail Employment

A Correctional Officer must be 21 years of age, a high school graduate or equivalent, a resident of Peoria County (or be willing to relocate within a year of being hired), and able to pass a series of tests. The tests include:

  • A written test (general aptitude) given by Bradley University
  • A physical ability test (Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report)
  • Background investigation
  • Oral interview
  • Polygraph
  • Pre-employment medical

Applicant needs to turn in with Application a copy of their Birth Certificate and a copy of their High School Diploma or GED. These do not have to be Certified copies. Also, if the Applicant was in any branch of the U.S. Military, a copy of their DD214.

Starting salary for a Correctional Officer as of November 30, 2007 is $30,622.00. The Peoria County Sheriff's Office provides health insurance (80/20) at a reasonable cost to the employee, which includes medical, dental, and vision, as well as a retirement package. Officers work five days per week, which could include weekends, since we are a 24 hour operation. Correctional Officers are assigned to any of three shifts.

Applications must be picked up and returned at the second floor of the Sheriff's Office, located at 301 N. Maxwell Road, in Peoria, Illinois. You should ask for an application specifically for a Correctional Officer. Salary is determined by union contract.

Records Employment

A Records/Clerical Reception Clerk must be a least 18 years of age, be a High School Graduate or equivalent, and be able to satisfactorily complete a series of tests. The tests include:

  • An oral interview
  • A typing test
  • A background investigation
  • A polygraph
  • A pre-employment medical exam

Starting salary for employees in the Records Division as of November 30, 2007 is $24,918.00. The Peoria County Sheriff's Office provides health insurance (80/20) at a reasonable cost to the employee, which includes medical, dental, and vision, as well as a retirement package. Clerks work five days per week, which could included weekends, as we are a 24 hour per day operation. Clerks may be assigned to any of three shifts.
