Peoria County Sheriff’s Office: Jail

The Peoria County Jail is located at 301 N. Maxwell Road in Peoria, Illinois. The current facility was opened in 1985, and had a capacity of 235 general population inmates, along with an 80 bed Work Release facility. An additional 144 beds were added to the facility in August of 1999. Corrections Superintendent Steven Smith is responsible for the operation of the Jail, with an Assistant Corrections Superintendent as second in command. Assisting him are four Deputy Corrections Superintendents, who serve as Shift Commanders for the three daily shifts. Seven Corrections Sergeants are next in rank, supervising a staff of 61 Correctional Officers.

This staff supervises the daily routine of the inmates incarcerated within its walls.

To be more effective and efficient in this role, the Sheriff's Department has incorporated new technology to assist its staff. A closed circuit microwave video bonding system, a digital computer driven mug shot system, a computerized booking system, and a live scan fingerprint process are some of the technological advances that are utilized to assist us in attaining our goals.
