Charging Division

The Charging Division decides whether criminal charges should be filed against adult offenders in felony and misdemeanor cases. The Charging Division also handles bond hearings.

About our Cases

Cases usually come to the Charging Division from local and state law enforcement agencies. Private citizens may request that charges be filed in some cases, after filing a police report. Please consult the Crime Victims section of our Frequently Asked Questions if you are a person who wishes to request criminal charges.

After filing felony charges against an offender, a charging prosecutor presents the case to the grand jury to seek an indictment. The case is assigned to a felony prosecutor if the grand jury issues a bill of indictment. Misdemeanor cases are generally not presented to the grand jury. Instead, a misdemeanor case is charged by the filing of an information. After the information is filed, the case is assigned to a misdemeanor prosecutor.
