Peoria County Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan
The Peoria County Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan was adopted by the Peoria County Board on May 10, 2018.
The purpose of hazard mitigation is to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk to people and property from natural and/or man-made hazards. Peoria County has prepared this local multi-hazard mitigation plan to better protect the people and property of the unincorporated areas of the County from the effects of natural and man-made hazard events. The plan update was prepared pursuant to the requirements of a the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 and is required to be updated within a five-year time-frame.
Plan Information
The plan development process identified hazards that threaten the County, determined the likely impacts of those hazards, set mitigation goals, and prioritized appropriate strategies for implementation to lessen impacts. The plan demonstrates the County’s commitment to reducing risks from hazards and serves as a tool to help decision makers direct mitigation activities and resources. In addition, the Plan is part of an annual process undertaken by Peoria County that reduces flood insurance premiums by 25% for Peoria County homeowners, and aids the County’s ongoing flood risk reduction efforts.

The following hazards have been identified as posing a risk to the citizens of Peoria County:

- Severe Storms & Tornados
- Winter Storms
- Land/Mine Subsidence
- Landslide
- Drought
- Extreme Heat
- Wildfire
- Earthquake
Goals of the Hazard Mitigation Plan
Goal 1: Reduce the vulnerability of the people, property, and environment of Peoria County from the effects of natural and man-made hazards.
Goal 2: Enhance public education programs to raise awareness of and prepardness for hazard events.
Goal 3: Improve and coordinate mitigation activities with surrounding communities, non-profits, and private businesses.
